In California’s recent budget crisis, Governor Arnold Schwarzenegger cut every last penny that the state gave to support domestic violence shelters. When a person is fleeing the abuse and terror of their husband, wife, or partner, these shelters are one of the few sources of safety for these victims. Now, thanks to the governor, many of these shelters are barely surviving themselves, or are closing their doors altogether.
To support these struggling shelters, singer-songwriter Moby has announced that he will donate the proceeds of his upcoming California concerts to the California Partnership to End Domestic Violence (CPEDV). CPEDV provides support to many shelters statewide, as well as pursues legislation that will help survivors and try to prevent future violence.
You can help support domestic violence shelters by attending Moby’s California shows, by donating money directly to CPEDV, or by donating your money or time directly to a California shelter.
If you yourself are a victim of domestic violence and need help, you can find advice and resources here.
Big props to Moby for his concern and action. We certainly hope that spreading the word about this will also raise awareness about the budget shortfall facing these organizations of hope, and help people also become more aware about the domestic violence crisis itself.
