Congressional Panel Recognizes Armenian Genocide

Congressional Panel Recognizes Armenian Genocide

By a narrow vote, the House Foreign Affairs Committee has approved a resolution to declare that the massacre of 1.5 million Armenians by Ottoman Turks in 1915 was a genocide. This has long been an important issue to Armenians, who want their suffering recognized. However, Turkey has continually denied this, and has threatened the US government to leave this topic alone.  And US politicians have usually relented, fearing that taking this stand would hurt diplomatic and military relations between the two countries. In fact, the White House and the US State Department both put pressure on this committee not to approve this resolution.

The bill will now go to the full House for a vote, where no one is sure of the final outcome.

I really hope that the armenians are recognized for all of the pain they have suffered and all of the hard ships they have dealt with, I am only 14 but I have done research on this topic and found out just how horrendously this country has been treated and I am truly saddened to hear that we, america, are to afraid to lose any type of diplomatic relations or militant relations with turkey and so we wont just go on and recognize the fact that these people were slaughtered and killed. It is truly disgusting how our government can let these people go on unrecognized for their troubles. This is truly a deaf massacre.

When U.S. policy would react to and illogical policy of Greece regarding Macedonia and Macedonians to call their country as they feel the Republic of Macedonia, and they themselves as Macedonians. Today in the 21st century Greece supported by the European Union is pressing R. Macedonia should change its name, the name of the Macedonian identity and language. This nebulousness of Greece and the United Nations accepted that the State received a R. Macedonia under the name FYROM. This must stop, and this is genocide to seek a third party to change its own name.

The eyes of the world are on them, so it will be a very public tragedy if the bill does not go through. I don’t doubt that I speak for all of us in New Zealand when I say that our thoughts and prayers are with those who have suffered either directly or indirectly as a result of these atrocities. The world can only begin to purge itself of its dis-ease by first acknowledging it.
Let’s put some love out there for a change, people. That’s up to all of us as individuals.
Love to all from NZ xxx.

I am very glad that we may be heading to a passage of this bill. I am a descendant of Holocaust survivors and we were taught not only about the suffering of the Jews, but of all people. It has long been recognized that the Armenian Genocide has just been swept under the rug in this political atmosphere. I really hope that as a nation we have enough social conciousness to recognize these atrocities.

I hope that the Turkish finnaly admit to what they have done and the American congress run the bill through. For 95 years or more Armenia’s suffering has been ignored, now is the time to grant them the justice that for so long they have pleaded for. It’s time for the Turkish to grow up, and it’s time America fought to help Armenia rather then half argued for fear of angering the Turkish. It’s time Armenia’s pain was recognised!!

I feel for the people of Armenia. I just don’t feel US taxpayer dollars should be used to recognize this. The world is headed for a currency crisis and nobody cares. The US is going to start feeling the fact that the only reason why we live the way we live here in the US is all a fake lie that is about to come down upon us, and the 16 year old MTV generation has no idea how hard they’re about to be hit.

  8. Stephanie says:

I agree that the Armenian Genocide should be recognized but now is not the time to spend tax money on such a thing. We need to fix the currency crisis before we start to recognize things that are over.

I wish the UK and USA would teach kids about what happened. I’m fifteen and I’ve been trying to let people know about it, but most people my age just aren’t interested and it’s quite heartbreaking. I’m pissed off at the government and my school for not teaching us about it. Without Axis and System of a Down, I would never have had a clue! If you agree that school students should be educated on the Armenian Genocide, please sign my online petition.
