A People’s History of the United States

A People’s History of the United States

By Howard Zinn

Most of you have already read it, but in honor of the passing of Howard Zinn, we thought we’d put it back in the spotlight. Revolutionary work showing history from the side of the everyday people who lived in these times and fought in these struggles.

We’d also recommend A People’s History of the American Empire which is sort of a cross between the book above, a Howard Zinn autobiography, and a comic book. Light, informative and moving.

A friend from high school that I got back in contact with kept recommending this book. Every time I talked to him, he would always talk about A People’s History. I finally picked it up a couple of weeks ago at my local bookstore and I haven’t been able to put it down. For years I have perceived that oppressive nature of the United States. Not until I read this book did I realize how deep the roots of Empire go; but I am continually awed at how generations of hard working people resist and demand change. Through this history we can learn from the mistakes of the past and not to be fooled time after time with trivial “compromises”. This book has put into perspective the real price of change and the rewards of active bravery. Thanks Howard for all your hard work; May you live on through your words and inspire generations to come.
